Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April, 1972. Her grandmother raised her and she was a sole child. Scott went to The Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she enrolled in Temple University. In Temple, Scott held two jobs while she was studying secondary education. She hoped she would become an English High School teacher. However, her dream was ended when, after three years of studies and as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of university. Her career began by performing live poems and her own work. Then she joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. At an Roots performance, she was spotted to be an artist. In the following years, she managed to get collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In the Canada tour for Rent, the Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable experience performing. She was also the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
